Overseas Healthcare Professionals

Since 2001 MRCF has been providing support to overseas qualified doctors and dentists so that they can pass requalification exams and work in the UK. The requalification process is lengthy and people often face many barriers. MRCF provides practical help to ease this process.

Support for overseas qualified dentists

MRCF is the only organisation providing support to over 3000 overseas qualified dentists. We support migrant and refugee dentists studying for requalification exams by providing:

  • Phantom head practice session (self taught without a supervisor)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR)
  • Pracitce facilities for drilling and other medical procedures
  • Dentistry library
  • MRCF provide a room to members who would like to come and Study in small groups
  • Online Study Group for peer-exchange of information

In 2009, MRCF worked with Dr Almasri and the London Academy of Higher Dental Education to set up a series of low cost lectures for dentists preparing for requalification exams.  (www.lad-edu.com)

Support for overseas qualified doctors

MRCF has supported 800 doctors from 199* to 200*. In the past, MRCF provided many services but after successfully lobbying the government, the NHS and other professional bodies have taken over the majority of the support work.

MRCF operate a medical library for doctors and dentists registered with the project which allows you to borrow books to prepare for your requalification exams.

Stories

Rabeha
Rabeha is a 40 year old woman from Afghanistan who came to the UK with her then husband. She now has indefinite leave to remain in the UK. She trained for five years at Kabul Medical University and worked for almost 15 years as a dentist. She has worked as a dental nurse in the UK while she studied to pass her requalification exams, but had to leave this job to look after her mother became ill.
Nkoyo
Nkoyo is from Nigeria. She is 39 years old and is married with two children. She originally came to the UK through the highly skilled migrants’ scheme in 2006. She was a senior registrar in Nigeria. She is not working at the moment and is studying to pass her requalification exams.

Research

‘Losing out Twice? Skill Wastage of Overseas Health Professionals in the UK’ (2006)- This paper examines the impact of UK employment policies and international recruitment schemes on overseas-qualified migrant and refugee doctors and dentists arriving in the UK since 2001.

NOTE: MRCF provides support exclusively on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We are unable to field any questions outside of these set days.
